Absolutely loved our stay at Goats Square Cottage
Everything was A1 & loved brekky, fire & nice size & comfortable bed
Our three days in the Barossa was just so nice & could not have wished for a nicer place to stay
Joylene at the Information Centre gave us excellent information also.
Everything about Goat Square Cottages was perfect. We were wanting to stay in an historic building and this didn't disappoint. However they are luxuriously appointed and sympathetically renovated. Also, Tanunda is a perfect centralised place to do wineries from. Highly recommend.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay as soon as we stepped foot inside our beautiful 1840s cottage! The bed was comfortable and lovely soft pillows. The bathroom is large. The breakfast supplies were more than ample for two nights and in fact had some for dinner one night after being out all day in the heatwave! Ngaire, the Manager, was extremely easy to deal with which always makes a stay more pleasant. Organising key was simple as was departure. The cottages are close to the beautiful shops and cafes no need to drive. I'd recommend Goat Square to anyone. I would definitely stay here again
Outstanding! We stayed in the cottages with 2 other couples we all had our own space but fantastic common areas in the courtyard, fantastic kitchen supplies the smoked bacon was amazing, the history of Goats Square was simply incredible a wonderful experience a perfectly located base for our 4 nights we will most certainly be returning!

Lovely cosy cottage in fantastic location. We particularly appreciated the underfloor heating, and the bonus of a fire as well as the air conditioner, plus the added little touches of generous hospitality. Loved it!
Gorgeous heritage Menge cottage was comfortable, spacious with tasteful furnishings. We loved the pot belly stove, breakfast provisions, comfortable king bed, peaceful street and close proximity to the main street. We can also recommend Tanunda bakery, Red Door coffee was convenient and the satays & fried rice at Kampung Kitchen was nice. Thanks, we would definitely stay here again.

Thanks for the great endorsements of local eateries - much appreciated
We loved staying at Goat Square as the Ziegenmarkt and the history of the building was a great escape. We weren't expecting five star given the age of the dwelling but it delivered in historical appeal and ambience. The positive were the comfortable beds, the historic feel of the dwelling, the little courtyard under the Avocado tree, the central location and the fireplace. The negatives were providing cage eggs for breakfast, not enough toilet paper for two couples for 6 nights, no instructions as to where to find the firewood, everyone in all three cottages could hear what each other was sayings as noise travelled.
The negatives were only minor and the positives far outweighed them.
Overall, it was a great stay and a trip back in time.

Glad you overall thought it was a great place to stay. Our local Manager drops by the cottages each day and her mobile phone number is in your confirmation letter, the guest compendium on the kitchen table and the verandah post of the laundry - it only takes a quick call to sort out issues like toilet paper or fire wood. Firewood is not normally provided during the Fire Danger Season. Glad you ended up finding the wood shed with a great supply of cut dry wood.
Unfortunately the WiFi service wasn't working. However, despite this minor inconvenience we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Goat Square Cottages. Overall we would have given our satisfaction as "very good" but your review doesn't allow for this rating.

Unfortunately our phone line was cut by contractors and it could not be quickly repaired by Telstra
We enjoyed being able to light a fire and appreciated bottle of wine, chocolates and free laundry facilities.
Sharing a bathroom was OK - but we suggest a shower curtain would help keep the floor dry.
We will recommend Goat Square cottages to friends. Thank you
We loved the Goat Square Cottages, had a great time there! The cottage was comfortable, it's close to everything, the breakfast supplies were very generous and the staff went out of their way to accommodate our early check in. We would 100% recommend it to anyone looking for a nice quiet stay in a central location.
I love reading about the history of the cottages. I love the size of the bathroom and the cottages itself. We booked all three cottages and found not every house had the same things like different types of food and the information about the cottage was only in one of the cottages. I found the price quite expensive but similar to surrounding properties. The cottages felt a bit unsecured but I guess the neighbourhood appears safe. Overall, I think its very different to the properties we usually stay in and I love that!
I booked all cottages for the weekend and 4 couples used the facilities. We all had a great time. The location of Goats Square Cottage is very convenient to the main street and the gardens are lovely. There is plenty of off street parking and the breakfast provisions very good. Great accommodation.
One suitcase rack and no wardrobe was hardly sufficient for a 5 night stay for two people. BBQ autostart broken and no matches provided. Lounge in Kavel definitely seen better days. Only mirror was above basin in bathroom.
All that we would have appreciated was a full length mirror and wardrobe or closet to put our clothes in as we attending a formal occasion. Aside from this we loved our stay! It was so peaceful and the provisions left for breakfast were very good as was the Goat square Shiraz.

Goat square Cottages take you back to a bygone era. Built in 1840 the Cottages are a reminder of the past with the actual Bakers Oven still a fixture. Proximity to the village of Tanunda was only 300m and an easy drive to the vineyards, many antique stores, chocolate factory, Maggie Beers and other attractions.
The wood fire was amazing.

Our stay at Goat Square Cottages was absolutely fabulous! The breakfast provided was perfect for our three night stay and the wine provided was great! Great location for our Barossa Gourmet Weekend stay, close to the info centre and bus pick up location. Definitely recommend a stay at Goat Square, we hope to be back soon!
None of the three cottages had hot water for two(2) days - Sat & Sun. We were not going to raise it but you have sent the review. Great place to stay & we would stay there again but this hot water issue spoilt a great time. Sorry,
Gary & Mary Ibbotson.

We sincerely apologise - but it was extra ordinary weather with multiple power failures and high winds - the gas hot water system played up but was fixed at 10am each day. Our plumer/gasfitter (who gives our guests priority service) was on to the problem as soon as he possibly could be
small cottage but the space is used really well so it doesn't feel cramped at all. Cupboards stocked with everything you could need plus great breakfast provisions. Maybe invest in a pod coffee machine for fussy coffee drinkers like me (but Red door espresso down the street has great coffee anyway). Location brilliant, will definitely stay again.
Tuesday, 21 Jul 2015
Glad you loved Kavel Cottage - we are looking in to pod filter coffee machines!! But you really can't go past Red Door!!
Had everything we needed.Gardens lovely.Inside could do with a bit of refreshing in parts-some plasterwork missing near fire and a few marks on some walls.Loved all the extras left for us.Also off street parking great.
We had a perfect stay in the Menge Cottage. Easy walking distance to the main street of Tanunda, a beautiful bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived, completely relaxing almost impossible to want to leave and go home.
Pure bliss. We'll be back again!
Lovely, well maintained historical building with very comfortable facilities which includes the beds. The place has atmosphere & character & all the provisions for the inclusive breakfast were excellent.
Thanks for your feedback re the toilet paper - it is indeed a pity that it was overlooked when the cottage was set up for you. It is also a pity that you did not call the Manager whose number was in your confirmation letter (and in the guest information folder) to arrange for some to be supplied
Would love some more information on this history of the cottages. What were they built as, and what have they been used for over the years?
Monday, 06 Oct 2014
The Goat Square Cottages were built as one rambling house and date largely from 1867, incorporating features from an original structure built in the 1840s, including the old baker’s oven in Flaxman Cottage. They are on the State Heritage Register and were entered on the Register of the National Estate. The buildings were used primarily for residential purposes through to the early 1990's
Website and other guests made much of fact there was lots of breakfast supplies.we stated for 5 nights and were told supplies were being topped up. They weren't and we were left without bread. Had to ask for fresh towels. For a five day stay should be automatic. Guest book mentioned chocolates were provided. We didn't get any.
Sunday, 07 Sep 2014
Thankyou for your feedback. The Manager called and saw you and supplied you with fresh towels and checked on breakfast provisions. If you had run out of bread a simple call to the Manager would have had a fresh loaf there in minutes. Her number is in the guest information folder and on your booking confirmation and on the sign. A small pack of Lindt chocolates is normally left next to the port decanter. If this was missed we apologise.
maintenance seems to be a problem and it may have been only on this occasion, but overall the cottage cleanliness was average,a lot of the tourist information out of date and items like cd player dvd player and alarm clock not provided but mentioned on web site ,these need to be deleted so there are no false expectations
Sunday, 03 Aug 2014
Thankyou for your feedback. The guest information folders are updated every quarter with new attractions and information sheets from the Visitor Information Centre. The CD and DVD player are built into the television set. The Alarm Clock is built in to the iPod docking station.
Would have appreciated bath robes. Also not impressed with the loaf of white bread....rye or sour dough would have been better. Perhaps the operator could have asked.
Tuesday, 27 May 2014
We trust you enjoyed your stay at Goat Square Cottages. The cottages are rated at 3.5 STARS and exceed the AAAT standards for that rating on most criteria including breakfast provisions left. Further enhancements like a choice of breads and bathrobes are what you are likely to find in 4.0 or 4.5 STAR rated properties in the mid to high $200 range.
It would have been nice if the autconditioning bracket was securely fixed on the wall. The breaky provisions were nice and the port was yum.
The doors to the bathroom scraped a little when you opened them. Otherwise, great comfy bed, good pillows and sheets, cute place.
We really enjoyed staying at Goat Square with all its beautiful charm and all the little extra's, however, a couple of extra towels for longer stays (no daily service) and a weekly spot clean of cobwebs would be great. Otherwise, fantastic place to stay for something completely different from the usual motels.
Wednesday, 23 Apr 2014
Thanks for your feedback. For three night stays, such as yours, we only provide one set of towels. For longer stays we provide additional toweling. Goat Square certainly is different from any motel!!!
We thought it was a well located cottage, could have done with a bigger couch (was a squeeze for 2 people). We loved all the food provisions, spa bath and fire.
We did hear the washing machine? beep throughout the night which was a little frustrating but all in all a great place to stay and we would stay again.
Monday, 13 Jan 2014
Thanks for letting us know about the beep from the washing machine in the separate Laundry building. It is something that we can address.
We totally loved the whole experience. My husband and I were on holiday from the Northern Territory and my sister was with us from Murray Bridge
The food supplies and bottle of red were most appreciated. Will recommend Goat Square Cottages to friends and re book if in the region again. Thanks for a great stay.

It is wonderful that the cottages get used for family reunions!
Our stay at Goat Square Cottages was fantastic. We loved the history of the buildings and Goat Square itself. The cottage facilities were top class & the manager went above and beyond her role to assist us with our needs.
Monday, 30 Sep 2013
Thank you for the kind words. We are very lucky to have someone as good as Ngaire to look after the cottages. Hope to see you back again one day.
As there was no daily servicing of cottage eg clean towels = extra provisions etc, maybe there should be a price reduction for the extra nights if the cottage is booked for 2 or more nights by the same party.
Julie & Brent
The cottages were well equipped, were walking distance to the Main Street of Tanunda and had a wonderful feel . We loved the history and quaintness. It was a great place to stay for 8 couples. Highly recommend.
Great accommodation for a group booking. Our group consisted of 4 couples. This place allowed each couple to have their own space but provided every opportunity for the group to enjoy drinks and meals together. BBQ breakfasts in the gardens were a bonus and pre and post dinner drinks by the fireplace were most enjoyable.
Booked all three cottages for family celebration weekend.
All cottages have been refurbished since previous visit. Still nice. Nice touches throughout. Shorter folk will have problems with kitchen o/head cupboard heights! Should supply a step for safe access.
Absolutely beautiful cottages! We rented all 3 for the day before, or and after my wedding in the Barossa Valley. They were so convenient and suited our needs perfectly. Plenty of provisions too and the bottle of wine was a lovely touch. Highly recommended.
We loved our stay, the cottage was beautiful and everything was clean. Breakfast provisions were superb. The only thing that was lacking was a stereo rather than the one on the TV as we couldn't play our iphone through it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Goat Square cottages, location was great, ambience was perfect, low doorways were a challange at first, and all the extras were really appreciated...bacon was sooo yummy...would def stay there again, preferably longer - the only real downside is no proper oven if you did want to stay longer term...but other than that it was just what we wanted in every way. thanks!!
Friday, 10 Aug 2012
Thanks for your great feedback - re the oven - bloody architects - don't really need to say any more - they think they know better than the customer!
Chris & Tom Murphy
A very quaint cottage and well appointed. Just a suggestion - a few more shelves and another towel rail in the bathroom, and please fix the door to the bedroom as it often pops open.
Lotta and Cliff
Loved all of it. Arrived late in the day without a booking and found ourselves a little piece of heaven. Gorgeous cottage, great spa, everything provided including the port. Loved every moment of it. Lotta and Cliff
Dean and Janet Phillips
Lovely location.Food in the room was O.K. We found the bacon to smoky for our taste and would have liked a bigger selection of cereals, tined or fresh fruit. Over three days more towels would be nice. Lovely quiet stay.
A great weekend stay. Character cottage, lovely ambience, cosy and cheerful. Really comfortable bed, underfloor heating was wonderful, Lots of "extras" provided, ie condiments in the kitchen, music and DVDs, and thoughtful touches in the bathroom. Would recommend!
I recently stayed at the Goat Square Cottages in Tanunda S.A. with two other couples. We occupied 3 of the apartments. The accommodation was excellent, clean, well appointed with generous breakfast provisions. Great shower! Would definitely stay again.
The bed was extremely hard which made for an uncomfortable stay.
Monday, 12 Mar 2012
Unfortunately the firmness of a mattress is such a subjective thing. The same SA made brand (Adriatic Slumber) and style/firmness of mattresses have been used at Goat Square Cottages for 9 years with a huge number of compliments.
There were just a few maintenance issues in the cottage that needed attention: we left a note about these - and little things - like coffee but no plunger, and ANCIENT magazines. A few up-to-date copies of Barossa Life and some tourism info would have been very nice. Otherwise, it was a beautiful place to stay and the decor was spot on. :-)
leah and david smith
perfect for our needs. ideal location in beautiful Tanunda.
very clean and loved rose garden. only small issue was with uncomfortable lounge but was a wonderful stay in the Barossa.

Thankyou for your feedback in relation to your stay in Kavel Cottage. The lounge is a new one and all other reports have been that it is comfortable!!!
Booked @ 1918 restaurant for Sat night, but left accomodation to the last minute. Spent couple of hours on Friday, being referred from one place to another, until finally to a booking agency. Very helpful and came back to me within 10 minutes as they said they would. Fortunate to have the opportunity, but glad we did.
Extremely happy with the facilities with the only hiccup not having hot water as we got ready for Saturday night dinner. A quick phone call and minutes later, all was good. Might say the partner was the one standing in the shower, not me!
Breakfast facilities and offering was certainly more than expected.
Only came up from Adelaide for the overnight stay with a visit to several wineries. Definitely enjoyed our experience and have already commented to friends. PS not the type to sit down and comment but give credit where credit is due. - Well Done and Thankyou.

Great that you enjoyed your stay at Goat Square Cottages - the hot water problem has now been fixed!
The cottage was delightful and the setting lovely. The welcome food package was excellent, generous and much appreciated.
The only two slight niggles we had were that there was only one log for the stove (the weather was great over our stay) and there was no hot water on the day we left.
Extra lighting (spot) in the kitchen would be helpful for food preparation and we were surprised there we no place mates for hot dishes to avoid damage to the dining table.
Other than that we found our stay delightful.

Goat Square Cottages was set in beautiful gardens and surrondings. It was old world charm finished with modern convienance.
The actual cottage itself was romantic, charming and very warmly.
My husband and I had a very romantic wedding anniversary and we couldn't have asked for anything more.
The bacon left for our breakfast was the tastiest I have had in years, the underfloor heating made the little cottage very cosy, plus there was a wood heater and two reverse cycle units. The beds very comfortable. Two nights wasn't enough!
Fabulous weekend. Cottage was lovely. Nice and warm. Would have liked another set of towels in bathroom or perhaps dressing gowns for after spa. Bed very comfy. For newcomers perhaps a sign or direction where to park when first arriving. Thanks.
Goats square cottages, what can i say......Great!
Nice and central to all wineries, restaurants and everything you need. Cosy little cottage with small doorways, which made me laugh:) Even just the little added things like Vegemite and bathroom accessories. The local bread that was supplied was awesome. Even the oranges in the backyard!
Would like to visit again:)
Thank you for a wonderful stay.
Mick and Bronwyn Billing
We especially loved the underfloor heating. Breakfast provisions were excellent, too. A great weekend break and we hope to return for a longer stay. Only one thing could be improved - a better hanging arrangement for clothes - we only had one change of clothes, but it was a juggle on the hatrack.
A comfortable self contained cottage, well sited to the township and restaurants.
Parking while sufficient, was not a fantastic set up. A single A4 sheet with restaurant/tour/handy numbers would have been helpful.
Room was very clean and nicely furnished. Climate control very good, bed was comfy.
Kitchen and the communal laundry well supplied. Spa was thankfully large (I'm 6'2).
A relaxed and enjoyable experience.
We stayed at the Flaxman Cottage for 2 nights during July 2011. The cottages have been renovated to a very high standard, with underfloor heating in the kitchen and bathroom (plus electric heating & cooling in the other rooms), new kitchen and quality decor and linen. The cottages combine history and comfort in an original and quaint garden setting. If/when we pass thru the Barossa again, we will stay there again.
PS. The only reason I marked Service as a 4 was because these are self contained flats and Not Applicable would have been a better answer.
A wonderful place to stay - beautiful facilities, delightful building, superb breakfast food - I cannot recommend Gaot Square Cottages highly enough. Thank you for a wonderful place to enjoy our first holiday without children for 25 years.
We stayed in the "Menge Cottage" at Goat Square Cottages (Tanunda) and thought it was just gorgeous. Everything you could think of was supplied....dvds etc and even Cadbury hot chocolate!! Spa was great and underfloor heating is just divine - being in the Barossa Valley in the middle of Winter and being able to walk around barefoot early in the morning is almost unbelievable! Enjoyed our stay and would love to go again someday!
the B & B manager was vey friendly, helpful and welcoming.
The location of the Goat Square cottages is good for a base to explore the delights of Tanunda and the rest of the Barossa.
Another trip to the Barossa is definitely "on the cards'.
Loved our stay in Menge cottage. Location was perfect for walking to restaurants/pubs/shops. Very comfortable and provisions were of great quality. If you're tall, watch your head as you walk from lounge into kitchen (ouch). Will definitely be back for a visit.
J and M Graham
Breakfast supplies highist quality Barossa produce. Complimentary extra's
Beatuiful herb garden. Walk to eateries/Restraunt/Hotel/shopping centre.Short drive to wineries 5mins. 1hour country drive from Adelaide. We travel 1500km from Alice Springs for this little piece of heaven.
Mr and mrs seymour
Had a lovely stay, Loved the underfloor heating in kitchen and bathroom.
Only didn't realise that the cottages were all connected.
However didn't bother us as had quite neighbours.
Monday, 23 May 2011
Goat Square Cottages are some of the oldest cottages in the Barossa - luckily in the 1850's they built with very thick walls so not only are the cottages cosy all year round, you don't know that anyone is next door.
Sharon & Jon Hynes
Goat Square Cottages were a delight. Everything one could ask for (even heated floors in the bathroom and kitchen) in a 100 year + old cottage. Extremely comfortable and well equipped throughout, and the bacon and eggs in the fridge for breakfast was delightful. Just watch the heith of the doorways - they must have been short a century ago! We would certainly return when we're in the Barossa again.
Overall it was very good. It is a quiet location so easy to sleep at night. It is close to town so we could walk down into town really easily and quickly. The food left for us was very good. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The TV was too small but I am used to a large flat screen. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely return at a future time.
WE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED OUR TIME AT GOAT SQUARE COTTAGES. THE COTTAGES WERE WELL APPOINTED AND VERY COMFORTABLE. THE BREAKFAST PROVIDED WAS MOST ENJOYABLE AND I PARTICULARLY WAS GRATEFUL FOR THE PROVISION OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD.
Stayed here prior, biggest change was they now provide super market bacon (UGH!). The last time it was a lovely smoked Steinys bacon which we all enjoyed.
There were plenty of eggs supplied so that was appreciated.
Monday, 28 Mar 2011
Thanks for your return visit - we find a lot of people come back to Goat Square - and often bring friends to enjoy the cottages (and the Barossa).
You were unfortunate to get supermarket bacon - we normally have the locally smoked bacon from either Schulz's from Angaston or Steiny's from Tanunda but occasionally run out and have to use supermarket stuff.
I would just like to say that we enjoyed our stay, we just noticed how noisy the hot water pump was which didn't disturb us inside but was quite annoying when we were using the barbeque & outside area to eat. The hot water was also very slow at heating up. Perhaps the garden & outside furniture could also do with some attention before guests arrive. It was a little bit hard to know where to park so that all 3 cars could get in & out easily.
Location was fantastic - walk to main street etc. Hot water service was a little hard to get use to but managed in the end. Loved the area reminded us of southern highlands and blue mountains of NSW. Our daughter recommended Tanunda after visiting for a wedding a few years ago, is back this weekend for another.
We really liked the cottage and the garden is a great feature.
For cooking we found we were short some items we needed. We didn`t have more than two glasses and not matching ones either. No wine glasses? The bottle of sparkling port and chocolates was excellent choice.
Overall we were quite happy with our stay.
